The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Turquoise Coast is one of the most beautiful and dramatic stretches of coastline in the Mediterranean. The coast is littered with beautiful beaches, crystal clear, turquoise seas, stunning scenery, secluded coves and fascinating ancient sites full of history and culture.
Boat trips are a great way to see more of the coastline and are available from Çalis or Fethiye. These are really good value days out – you will drop anchor in coves where the water is crystal clear. A large buffet meal is usually part of the price.
From Çalis its easy to get to Olu Deniz and see the Blue Lagoon which has been awarded the blue flag and is reputed to be one of the most spectacular beaches in Europe. Here you can paraglide down from the mountains above onto the magnificent sandy bay.
Further afield, and great ideas for days out; Patara Beach, the wonderful hidden valley of Saklikent Gorge, the salt terraces of Pamukkale, Dalyan mud baths and Izuzu (turtle) Beach, and the atmospheric Abandoned Village, 12km above Fethiye.
The Fethiye / Calis Beach area
There is something for everyone in Çalis; shops, restaurants serving every kind of cuisine, and bars of all kinds. You might want to want to sit on the beach or at a bar and watch the sunset, then again, you could dance about at a Turkish bar or at one of the more clubby places. Nowhere ever seems to be really noisy.
(If it’s full-on discos, clubs and bars you want, then get a taxi to take you up to Hisaronu.)
A paved strip has been created along the sea front at Çalis Beach. It’s a great place to just wander along at any time of the day. Or jog. Or cycle. Or people-watch.
Çalis fun and sports facilities include a water/aqua park, a lawn bowls club and a tennis club.
Water taxis that take you across the bay to Fethiye and back can be picked up just by the bridge just near the seafront – get a late one back and lie on the upper deck and gaze at the stars.
Çalis Beach continues west to Koça Çalis. It is walkable but a quicker and cooler way to get there is to pay the negligible extra fare on the dolmus and, rather than get off at the bus station, ask to get off at the Surf Café where Koça Çalis begins. The vibe along this stretch is more laid back as there is no pavement and therefore no buildings directly along the sea front. Here you will find great places to eat, drink and relax.
Fethiye is only 4km away – a short Dolmus or taxi ride ride. It is a beautiful town – a mix of the old and the new.
It lies along the Lycean Way – there are rock tombs above the town, an old amphitheatre that the Romans turned into a forum, and a ruined castle that affords fantastic views over the town and across the bay – especially good at sunset.
Along Fethiye seafront there are cafés and restaurants where you can watch the boats come and go whilst you people-watch or play backgammon and drink Turkish tea or coffee. Or perhaps you might perefer a glass of Efes, the local beer or, if you like aniseed flavour drinks, try Raki, the Turkish equivalent.
Not far from the Dolmus terminus is the semi-covered and peaceful Fish Market where you can choose your fish from the stall in the middle and then have it cooked at one of the excellent restauarnts around the edge. N.B. you don’t have to be a fish fan; these are normal restaurants serving everything else too! There is a lovely fruit and veg market within the same building.
There is a fruit and veg market every day in Fethiye, but the best day to go is Tuesday and, as per the one held in Calis on Sundays, you can buy anything and everything here, as well as pancakes, pides and kebabs. It it situated along the river near the sea front and stays open until sunset.
Fethiye is not what youd call ouristy at all, but the centre of the town still retains an old souk/bazaar area, bustling with restaurants, bars and shops selling everything from leather goods and rugs to spices and jewellery.
How to get there
Best way to come is using Dalaman Airport. In summer time Dalaman airport is the best choice to come. You can come by bus to Fethiye Centrum and I can pik you up to home. The other way is I can provide Dalaman airport transfer which costs 50€ per car upto 4 person. For crowded groups let me know for transportation from airport.
